It’s no secret that I absolutely adore Labrador Retrievers. I’m a huge animal lover in general, but labs are extra special to me which is why I’m thrilled to support such a worthy cause that benefits these lovable creatures! “The Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida (LRROF) is a 100% volunteer Florida state-wide organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and placing Labrador Retrievers in loving, permanent homes.” They are celebrating their 20th anniversary of rescuing these amazing dogs!
The following are some cool facts about Labrador Retrievers:
1. Labs are America’s favorite breed. They’ve been at the top of the list for 28 years in a row which is the longest reign of any breed in AKC history!
2. You can get all three colors in one litter regardless of the parents’ color. There are two genes that cause the pigmentation of the coat, so the variation can be just as common as different hair colors in a human family.
3. They are the most commonly-used breed for guide dogs. Because labs are eager to please, easily adaptable and easily trained they are the best breed for the job.
4. They are known for their ability to sprint. Labs can hit 12mph in just 3 seconds!!!
5. Labs can tell if you have cancer! Through work with cancer cell samples, dogs can learn to smell disease thanks to their powerful noses.
6. A Labrador Retriever was the first dog to appear on the cover of Life magazine, December 12, 1938.
7. The American Kennel Association (AKA) officially recognized them as a breed in 1917.
8. Although they are from Newfoundland they bear the lab name because they originated as work dogs from the Labrador Sea. It’s also believed that it came from the Portuguese word lavradores which means worker.
9. Labs originally helped fishermen retrieve fish and collect lines and nets in the water in Newfoundland.
10. They are speedy swimmers thanks to their webbed toes and their double coat keeps them insulated and almost waterproof. Anyone that owns a lab knows it’s almost impossible to keep them out of the water!
In my opinion, it’s their gentle, friendly and active personalities that make Labrador Retrievers so awesome. Those qualities coupled with how loyal and lovable they are make them an excellent addition to any family! <3
